Use Strong Passwords & Use a Password Management Tool. You’ve probably heard that strong passwords are critical to online security. The truth is passwords are important in keeping hackers out of your data! According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) 2017 new password policy framework, you should consider: Dropping the crazy, complex mixture of upper case letters, symbols, and numbers. Instead, opt for something more user-friendly but with at least eight characters and a maximum length of 64 characters. If you want to make it easier to manage your passwords, try using a password management tool or password account vault. LastPass FREE is a great tool for an individual. The app also supports the light and dark mode available on Windows 10, and the new experience offers a less intrusive screen for “Hey Cortana” queries that can stay in the flow while you work. In addition, the assistant has been updated with new speech and language models, performance has improved, and you can even drag and resize like any other app. As a result of this transmission from being a core feature to be converted to an app, you’ll no longer find references of Cortana in the homepage of the Settings app. Windows 10 April 2020 Update is adding changes to make the Optional Features settings more usable, including the ability to select and install multiple optional features at the same time. Usefully, Microsoft is making the option to restart apps you were running before you restarted Windows easier to find (previously this option was tied to the “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device” option under Sign-in options in accounts settings). It’s now off by default, including for UWP apps, which start minimized and suspended. Under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, turn on “Automatically save my restartable apps when I sign out and restart them after I sign in.” under “Restart apps” to change this behaviour.

Though the situation is improving, unnecessary preinstalled software installed by PC makers continues to be an issue with some new computers. A couple of years ago, a Lenovo PC we tested had nearly 20 so-called helper programs installed, and these would occasionally and unwantedly pop up and interrupt what we were doing on the computer. More recently, the count of preinstalled, unnecessary software has dropped. A new HP laptop included just nine of these apps, while a recent Asus model only had five. Even Microsoft is not blameless in this game, though, including a couple of games from King and perhaps some mixed reality software you may not be interested in.
