The rainforest on the island of Borneo – the third largest island in the world – is estimated to be around 140 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Known as Asia’s last great rainforest, it is a mix of lowland and montane rainforest located above 1,000m (3,300ft). The Borneo lowland rainforest in particular is diminishing due to logging, hunting and conversion to commercial land use – so much so that in 2007 the Heart of Borneo Initiative was launched by the WWF to save one of the largest rainforests in the world. The agreement, signed by the governments of Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, intends to protect a vast tract of rainforest on the island. Like many tropical areas around the world, Borneo’s rainforests are deforested for timber, palm oil, pulp, rubber and minerals. As such, Borneo has lost 30% of its forest in the past 40 years, falling at twice the rate as the rest of the world’s rainforests. Large mammals such as orangutans and elephants are particularly at risk.

Sundarbans Researve Forest: The Sundarbans Researve Forest is within the Bangladesh area and covers 40 percent of India. The entire land area covered by the forest is 10,000 km2. It is one of the natural mysteries of the word because of its location in the Padma, Brahmaputra, and Meghna river basins. Mangrove trees dominate the forest and it also serves as a habitat to the Bengal tiger. Monteverade Forest: Located in Costa Rica, the forest is named after Monteverade and covers an area of more than 10,500 hectares. Tropical green vegetation covers most of the area with nearly 2,500 plant species, 120 amphibian and reptilian species, thousands of insects, 400 varieties of birds, and 100 different mammals. The forest also has natural rivers, medicinal herbs, streams, and waterfalls and because of these natural resources it’s always referred to as “the virgin forest.”

While it would seem that the wet environment would result in a prolific mosquito population, the water in El Yunque is constantly running down the mountain and rapidly, and it rains about four times a day preventing any standing water, so there are no mosquitoes in the rainforest. You can wear insect repellent if you choose, but if so DO NOT go into any water sources. The chemicals in bug spray are hazardous to the fragile ecosystem. Perhaps just cover with long pants and long-sleeved shirts instead of using repellent. See more info on https://www.recordandoyunque.store/blogs/news. In Puerto Rico El Yunque rain forest is a jewel filled with mystery and wonder, also with fear of getting lost there. It is far more immense that we believe. People have been lost years ago never to appear again! The steepness of the ground, the low visibility, the dense vegetation, the huge boulders, endless rivers with trunks and large boulders on the way all can conspire for accidents.
